LMU community expresses mixed response to senate vote on divestment legislation

Following the ASLMU senate’s incorrect announcement that ASLMU President Drew Hartz’s veto on the divestment bylaw clause was overturned, the ASLMU Instagram posted a clarification stating that neither the Socially Responsible Divestment resolution or the bylaw had passed. Posted just hours after the senate meeting on Thursday, April 18, the post stated that the bylaw vote did not meet the minimum threshold of seven votes, or three-fourths of the senate, to be overturned.

If passed, the resolution would have ensured that ASLMU abstains funds from companies on the Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS) list, which includes companies that support Israel’s occupation of Palestine. The bylaw would have created a “checks and balances” procedure for ASLMU members and faculty with purchasing power in an effort to abstain funds from companies implicated in human rights violations, specifically those on the BDS list.
